It is considered on of the largest cities in the world. It is so popular that in 2008 it was ranked a top three destination only behind London and New York in Euromonitor International's top lists. From Bangkok's natural sights, history and incredible shopping opportunities, there is really something for everyone that visits. No one will ever be disappointed. The National Art Gallery has a full collection of Thai and regional art not found anywhere else. The National Art gallery is located by the Phra Pinklao bridge.
It is also simply a shopper's paradise. The good news is that the skytrain and underground makes it easy for any newcomer to travel in the city. The Chatuchak weekend market is huge. It covers an astonishing thirty five acres (1.1.km) and contains more than five thousand stalls. All kinds of items including original Thai handicrafts, collectibles, clothing, household items, foods and even live animals can be found. There are also plenty of places to just sit down, relax and enjoy a meal. For the tourist's comfort and security the Thai government has a completely separate police for the tourists.
A must see visit for anyone visiting is the floating markets. These sellers have their boats full of flowers, vegetables, tropical fruits and they often barter with other traders.
The Ratchaburi is the largest floating market and it is something that any visitor that is fortunate enough to see will never forget. It is also one of the most photographed areas in the world. If planning a visit, it is best to hire a boat for the day. This will give you a tour along the klongs where the exquisite Thai homes and gardens can be seen. There is an old saying that the early bird gets the worm and this is specially true when visiting the wonderful floating markets. The reason is that the traders are early risers and activities begin at dawn. If you wait too long, it is easy to miss it, as they usually will head back by late morning.
There are activities for everyone to enjoy including the Bangkok Songkran Festival from the thirteenth to the fifteenth of April. This is the Thai new year. At the Sanam Luang, by the Grand Palace, the holy Phra Phuttha Sihing image is displayed and many devotees come to visit. Miss Songkran beauty contest is held in the Wisutkasat area, and Khao San Road, Bang Lamphu area is a favorite spots in the city where both the locals and also the tourists enjoy water throwing activities.
There is also the Queen's Birthday Celebration on August the twelfth. In this celebration the Queen Sirikit is honored. The residents take part by decorating their public buildings and homes. Many coloured lights and elegant adornments are placed everywhere including the Grand Palace. In the December month, the King and Queen celebrate the Trooping of the Colours. This is an annual event at the Royal Plaza near the statue of King Chulalongkorn. It is a beautiful ceremony where members of the special Royal guards swear allegiance to the king and the monarch. They will dress in traditional uniforms at the ceremony and march in front of the Royal Family.
There are many reasons why tourists that go to Bangkok always long to return. It is indeed a unique, magical place.
