Some of the world's oldest, largest and most elaborate Buddhist temples are in Thailand. There are over 26,000 and each one offers unique elements worth seeing. Some of the most popular include the ancient temples in Ayutthaya. Wat Chai Mongkol has a spectacular bronze statue of the Buddha in the reclining position. The Wat Triamit Temple features a solid gold statue of the Buddha. The largest statue in Bangkok is in the Wat Phu temple. This fifty foot tall statue is of the reclining Buddha. Wat Phra Kaeo or the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, the most revered Buddha statue in Thailand, is part of the Grand Palace complex which houses the home of the King of Thailand. Wat Arun, named in honor of Aruna, the Indian God of the Dawn, is one of the most famous places in Bangkok. It's over 200 foot tall porcelain and glass central pagoda is one of the most recognizable pieces of architecture in Thailand.
Thailand also has several great national parks. Khao Yai National Park is Thailand's most famous but Nam Nao National Park in Phetchabun Province should also be on your list. The park boasts waterfalls, cliffs, caves, tigers, leopards, wild boars, Black bears and elephants. There are also numerous birds, fantastic scenery and unique forests. The Bridge on the River Kwai is a trip of major historical significance. Thousands of Allied prisoners and local people were worked to death here during World War II to build this bridge and the infamous Death Railway.
Hiking through the mountains and forests of Chaing Mai in northern Thailand, seeing the limestone cliffs of Railay Beach in Southern Thailand, visiting the exotic Phi Phi Islands with their coral reefs perfect for snorkeling or diving or exploring Phuket Beach and Ao Nang Beach two good locations for diving is a must. Part of the fun in Thailand is visiting the many islands in the country's southern end. The tropical rainforests and peaceful beaches of Koh Samui or for those who love to party Koh Pha Ngan is the place to be for the wild and wonderful Full Moon Party. Places like the night bazaars (Kad Luang) also called the Royal Market are also fun.
Experiencing Thai food is an essential element of any trip to Thailand. An excellent way to enjoy it is to visit the pineapple plantations, sugar cane fields and rice paddies followed by a boat ride through the Damoen Saduak Floating Market. There hundreds of Thai canoes loaded with meats, fruits, vegetables, sweets and anything else one can imagine create an explosion of sound, smells and colors. Later you can sample the green eggs, edible insects and squid sticks or some of the other incredibly delicious, mouth-watering dishes. Be careful. Thai food can be spicey, tangy and fiery all at once.
